Hobby Chapter: Shogi Books Piling Up, My Own Style Prevails
I once talked about the mountain of unread shogi books I had. Here’s the update: I haven’t read a single page.
Instead, I’ve become a self-styled follower of Kaku-koukan Furibisha (Bishop Exchange Ranging Rook).
Playing Around with Openings
The 7th-rank rook strategy, the 3rd-rank rook strategy, Fujii Takeshi’s Bishop Exchange Fourth File Rook, Ureshino-ryu… From these openings, depending on how things develop, I go into:
- Cheerful Central Rook (Gokigen Nakabisha),
- 5-3 Silver General Type Double Ranging Rook,
- and sometimes a sleeve rook surprise attack.
Completely freewheeling. It’s basically “posing as a theory-lover, but actually a surprise-attack player.”
Do I Want to Win, or Just Have Fun?
“Shogi is just a hobby, so play as you like,” I tell myself. But then another voice says, “Weren’t you supposed to want to win?” Maybe I won’t break this habit unless I get seriously burned on the board.
The Pile of Books Grows Again
And the scariest part? The pile of unread books keeps growing. Not a single one opened.
Well, this is who I am. Hopeless, really. Namo Amida Butsu…
