1️⃣ 「腐る」と「発酵」は紙一重
1️⃣ "Rot" and "Fermentation" Are Separated by a Thin Line
納豆は、煮豆が腐る寸前の奇跡でできている。
一歩間違えば悪臭、うまくいけば旨味。
この“ギリギリの線”の上でこそ、いのちは変化する。
Natto is born from the miracle that happens right before boiled beans rot.
One misstep leads to stench; when it goes right, it becomes flavor.
Life itself changes only upon that razor-thin line.
仏教が語るのも同じだ。
苦しみや迷いの中にも、救いの芽がある。
――腐っているように見えても、それはまだ発酵の途中かもしれない。
Buddhism tells the same story.
Even in suffering and confusion, the seed of salvation lies hidden.
— What looks like rotting may simply be fermentation in progress.
2️⃣ 「自力」ではなく「菌（他力）」による変化
2️⃣ Transformation Comes Not by Self-Effort, but by the Power of the Microbe (Tariki)
人間がどれほど丁寧に煮ても、豆は豆のまま。
最後に“変えてくれる”のは、人ではなく菌だ。
No matter how carefully we boil the beans, they remain beans.
It is not we who change them—it is the bacteria.
納豆は、自分の力では発酵できない。
他力（菌のはたらき）にまかせるしかない。
凡夫が阿弥陀仏に身をゆだねる姿と、どこか似ている。
Natto cannot ferment by its own will.
It must entrust itself to the working of others—the power of the microbes.
There’s something deeply Shinshū-like in that surrender to the unseen.
3️⃣ 「臭い」と「香り」のあいだ
3️⃣ Between Odor and Aroma
納豆のにおいは、好かれも嫌われもする。
でも、あの匂いこそ「分解と再生」の証。
仏教でいえば、生死不二――生と死は切り離せないという真理に近い。
くささの中に、いのちの循環がある。
The smell of natto divides people—some love it, some loathe it.
Yet that scent is proof of “decomposition and rebirth.”
In Buddhist terms, it is shōji fu-ni—life and death are not two.
Within the stench, the wheel of life turns.
4️⃣ 凡夫は、発酵する存在
4️⃣ Bonpu — The Fermenting Beings
腐りながら生き、
もがきながら変わり、
気づけば少し旨味が出ている。
We live while decaying,
struggle while transforming,
and one day realize—we’ve begun to taste a little better.
納豆は、凡夫のたとえ話だ。
自力ではどうにもならないけれど、
他力によって、今日もなんとか“食える味”になっている。
Natto is a parable of bonpu—ordinary, deluded beings.
We cannot change ourselves by effort alone,
but through tariki, the Other Power, we somehow remain palatable to the world.

5️⃣ In Closing
清らかさの中に救いはない。
発酵は、清潔よりも“ちょっと汚れた温もり”の中で起こる。
だからこそ、凡夫のままでよい。
煩悩を抱えたまま、糸を引きながら――
南無阿弥陀仏。
Salvation is not found in purity.
Fermentation happens in warmth—a little messy, a little impure.
That’s why it’s fine to stay as we are, bonpu through and through.
Clinging with our desires, pulling our threads—
Namu Amida Butsu.
